Abstract: This research aimed to study the belief in ghosts among Lanna people in general, the social and cultural contexts, and the Pu Sae Ya Sae ritual (Phee Dong) in Mae Hia Sub-district, Mueang District, Chiang Mai. It also presented the patterns and methods for further conservation and development of the Pu Sae Ya Sae ritual (Phee Dong) in such area for cultural tourism. It was regarded as the quality research whereas the instruments included an interview and a field study through the structured interview forms by purposive sampling. The study results revealed that the Pu Sae Ya Sae ritual was associated with Lua people, the ancient group in Southeast Asia. In fact, it was a combination of traditional belief and Buddhism to be developed into traditional custom and practice as a part of spirit worships in Chiang Mai. It additionally held value for lifestyles, spirituality, and worthiness in preserving the natural resources that linked the belief in ghosts to watershed forest conservation. The Pu Sae Ya Sae ritual or Phee Dong in Mae Hia Sub-district, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province, was handed down for more than 200 years till the current date. However, it was found that conservation and knowledge dissemination still lacked proper learning management. Therefore, the methods for effective learning and more interest among the local people, the public, and tourists should be established to raise awareness of values and importance regarding such ritual in various dimensions. A preparation of brochures and online media titled in “Conservation and Restoration of the Pu Sae Ya Sae Legend” along with the learning exhibition of “Recounting the Pu Sae Ya Sae Legend” can be further extended through learning and tourism mechanism as core culture of Chiang Mai.
