Abstract: This quasi-experimental research aims to compare the average knowledge scores and sodium consumption behavior among persons with uncontrolled hypertension between groups before and after participation in a program, and groups that received normal hospital service. The sample group of 54 hypertension uncontrolled people is comprised of a controlling group of 27 people and an experimental group of 27 people. The tools consisted of an eight-week capacity building program for village health volunteers. The program was developed from concept of competency theory by David C. McClelland which includes 5 component: 1) Knowledge 2) Skills 3) social Role 4) self-Image and 5) Motives for effects to knowledge and sodium consumption behaviors. Data were collected via three instruments: a demographic data questionnaire, a sodium knowledge (IOC = 0.80) with a reliance value of 0.87 and sodium consumption behavior questionnaire (CVI = 0.80) with a reliance value of 0.78. The data was then analyzed using Wilcoxon for the dependent sample and the Mann Whitney U test for the independent sample. The result has shown that after program, the experimental group displayed significantly higher than average scores for sodium knowledge than before participating in the program (P = .001), and more than that of the controlling group (P = .001). Sodium consumption behaviors than before participating in the program (P = .001), and more than that of the controlling group (P = .001) The outcome suggests that capacity building program for village health volunteers programs are recommended for educate in the sodium knowledge and consumption behavior of uncontrolled hypertension people.
