Abstract: | To resolve power factor problems in the electrical systems. The capacitor banks are commonly used to improve power factor because they are efficient enough to improve power factor and have a lower cost than other power factor correction methods. Power factor correction with capacitor banks, on the other hand, has limitations in terms of improving power factor during load changes, and there may be issues with overvoltage or harmonic current amplification, resulting in electrical system damage. Because of its quick responsiveness and accuracy, an active power filter (APF) is one of the solutions to this problem. However, this strategy is most commonly used to handle harmonic problems in non- linear systems. This study modifies the active power filter technique in non-linear systems that can be used in linear systems by using the instantaneous reactive power method and the synchronous reference frame approach. With this method, the limitation of enhancing power factor in capacitors can be solved. This study additionally enhances current control over conventional methods that control current on a three-phase a-b-c reference frame by controlling current on a two-phase stationary frame in the instantancous reactive power method and a two-phase rotating frame in the synchronous reference frame method. When compared to conventional technique, this method can also save one PI controller while maintaining the same performance. The proposed approach is validated using simulation results on a three-phase IM motor load rated at 14.7 KVA 380 V with loads varying from no-load to full-load. As a result of using the proposed approach to manage the shunt APF, the utility source achieves unity power factor or power factor correction. |
