Abstract: Aggressive behavior in patients with schizophrenia at emergency psychiatric departments affects patients themselves, their families and societies, and the medical personnel who provide services. Studying the factors related to these patients’ aggressive behavior is essential for further planning for the prevention of aggressive behaviors. This research aims to study the variables that may be associated with aggressive behavior at emergency psychiatric department, namely history of alcohol and drug use, overcrowding in service facilities, the psychotic-symptom level of schizophrenia, and the types of people who brought schizophrenia patients with aggressive behavior to emergency psychiatric departments. The sample was 189 patients with schizophrenia who received services in the emergency psychiatric department of a psychiatric hospital under the Department of Mental Health, at locations in four regions of Thailand. The research instruments were a personal questionnaire, an aggressive behavior assessment form, a mental health assessment form, and an overcrowded emergency room assessment which were checked for inter-rater reliability before being used for data collection. The results of the study revealed that 1) a history of alcohol and drug use (p < 0.003), 2) overcrowding in service facilities (r = 0.391, p < 0.001), 3) the psychotic-symptom level of schizophrenia (r = 0.478, p < 0.001) , and 4) the types of people who brought the patients to get service (p < 0.001) were statistically significantly correlated to aggressive behaviors among patients with schizophrenia who received service at emergency psychiatric departments. These findings can be used for care planning for patients with schizophrenia in emergency departments, and for further investigation of the predicting factors of aggressive behaviors to further serve as a basis for information to develop programs to manage this behavior in patients with schizophrenia at emergency psychiatric departments.
