Abstract: Hydrothermal liquefaction is a promising process for the production of high-quality bio-oil from biomass. Aim of this study is to design, build and test the operation of a laboratory scale hydrothermal liquefaction reactor for the production of bio-oil from two different biomass such tobacco residue and food waste. The effect of operating parameters such as reaction temperature (280 – 340 o C), reaction time (15 – 45 min), biomass to solvent ratio (1:10 – 1:3) and biomass composition on the product yields and quality of bio-oils was investigated to determine the optimal condition for the process at 1:3, 310 o C and 15 min for tobacco waste, as well as at 1:7, 340 o C and 30 min for food waste with the highest yield of 52 and 55% w/w, respectively. All the products of the process obtained under the optimal conditions were analyzed and characterized by elemental analysis and two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF-MS). The elemental analysis shows that the liquefaction bio-oil, characterized by higher energy density due to lower oxygen content. The GC×GC-TOF-MS analysis further reveals the class of compounds identified in HTL bio-oils has been shown to be strongly influenced by the composition of the initial biomass feedstock. The bio-oil from tobacco residue were mainly phenolics, carboxylic acids, aldehydes and alcohols were converted from lignocellulose. While fatty acids and amides are two important groups in the bio-oil from food waste, stemming from the conversion of protein carbohydrate and lipid.
