Abstract: The purpose of this research was to explore and to investigate the management, the role, function, and use of public spaces under the context of the social network amongst the local native residents in the Chiang Mai Old Town community: Muen Sarn, Wua Lai district, Chiang Mai. It has been one of the most significant neighbourhoods in the history and development of Chiang Mai city as a silver craft community since the revival of Chiang Mai, at the beginning of King Kawila reign. The conceptual framework of Chiang Mai old city is that it made up with the local communities and residents’ social network. In addition, the social networks in the community create activities that occur on public spaces in their daily life, and vise versa. As a result, the study on physical characteristics and the use of public spaces in the community must be studied hand in hand with the relationship of the social networks. The research methodologies are interviewing, monitoring, and observing various activities of the local residents in the Wat Muen San community. The results identified three interconnected groups of people in the community: 1) women and craftsperson 2) traditional craftsmen, and 3) new generation craftsmen. Their roles were linked to the opportunistic activities which are categorized into; necessary, optional, social, and social- voluntary activities. Community social areas include the Muen San temple, local shops, streets, house frontages and the areas along the fences. The research summaries are as follow: 1. the temple spaces are important public spaces for a variety of activities, 2. the streets are informal social meeting spaces, 3. the house frontage and the fenced areas are meeting areas for optional activities, 4. the local shops are social areas related to necessary and optional activities like eating and relaxation.
