Abstract: | Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia is a chronic disease that requires continuous treatment. Caregivers play an important role in care management to decrease the complications of the disease. The objectives of this descriptive correlational research study were to examine family management and the relationship of education, income and social support to family management in caregivers of children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. The sample was purposively selected and included 85 primary caregivers of children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. The children ranged in age from newborn to 3 years old received care from either the High Risk clinic, the Newborn clinic, or the Pediatric clinic at the pediatric out-patient departments at Maharaj Nakhon Chiangmai Hospital, Lampang Hospital, Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, and Uttaradit Hospital from October 2020 to February 2021. The research instruments consisted of the Social Support Questionnaire with a reliability of 81, the five dimensions of the Family Management Measure, with a reliability score between .81 and .85. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics eta coefficient, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results of the study revealed that: 1. The overall family management mean score were at a moderate level (x̄ = 136.36, SD = 10.01). Four of the five dimensions of family management were at moderate levels: child's daily life x̄ = 16.99, SD = 3.02), condition management etiort x̄ = 11.97, SD = 2.81), family life difticulty (x̄ =35.13, SD= 9.28), and view of condition impact (x̄ = 27.95, SD = 3.92). However, the dimension of condition management ability was at a high level; (x̄ = 44.56, SD = 5.90). The casy side of family management was 96.50% (x̄ = 61.55, SD = 7.89). The difficult side of family management was 76.50% (x̄ =74.71, SD = 14.32). 2. Education level of caregivers was positively correlated with family management in three dimensions; condition management ability, family life difficulty and view of condition impact; at a moderate level (η = .35, p < .05, η = .42, p <.05, η =.35, p< .05, respectively). Income was positively correlated with condition management ability at a moderate level (η = .37, p < .05). 3. The total mean scores of social support were positively correlated with family management in the area of condition management effort, family life difficulty, and view of condition impact, all of which scored within the moderate range (r =.37, p <.01, r = .33, p <.01, r = .32, p<.01, respectively). The study revealed that health personnel should be aware of the effect that education level, income, and social support have on caregivers. This information may allow them to help caregivers of children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia to have efficient family management. |
