Abstract: This research aims to identify the effect of pretreatment of energy crops resulting in increasing biogas production efficiency. The energy crop selected in this study is Napier Pakchong 1 grass (Pennisetum Purpureum cv. Pakchong1) which contains significant complex fiber including cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin together with silica crystal which can obstruct or prolong biological degradation process. Thus, the pretreatment of the grass is obviously essential to biogas production process especially in commercial energy crop power plant. The scope of this work focuses on finding optimal conditions for the biological pretreatment of Napier Pakchong 1 grass using initial mixed microbe from cow manure. The various parameters include process temperature, aeration rate, retention time and microbe recycling ratio. The best pretreatment condition will be applied to treat substrate for further methane production potential following VDI 4630 procedure. The result suggests that at and optimized pretreatment conditions of 55 °C and aeration rate of 53.00 Nm3air per ton fresh substrate per day with 24-hour retention time yields 39.90% decrease in celulose composition causing 17.11% increase in reducing sugar content. The methane production potential of pretreated Napier Pakchong 1 grass is 108.17 m3/ton of fresh substrate, an increase of 8.31% compared to untreated case at 99.40 m3/ ton.
