Abstract: This independent study examined the removing efficiency of Suspended Solids in airport wastewater by using water hyacinth in treated water basin as the final treatment. The study was conducted in a pilot basin which was scaled down from the actual treated water basin using the ratio of 1 to 5. The pilot basin was 2 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 0.5 meters deep. In this experiment, a total of 3 studies were conducted including, without water hyacinths in the basin, 1 5 % and 3 0 % of water hyacinth coverage over the water surface of pilot basin with duration of 1 month for each case. The wastewater properties that were considered include Suspended Solids, BOD, COD and Total Dissolved Solids. The results shows that 3 0 % coverage of water hyacinths provided highest Suspended Solids removal efficiency followed by 1 5 % and without water hyacinths in the basin, respectively. Mean values of Suspended Solids, BOD, COD and Total Dissolved Solids were 49.46%, 37.03%, 20.96%, and 20.57%, respectively. Adding water hyacinth in the proportion of 30% of the pond area can reduce Suspended Solids by an average of 49.46 ± 1.72 percent. While adding 15% of water hyacinth and without adding water hyacinth, the Suspended Solids were 43.24% ± 1.11 and 38.88% ± 2.54 and respectively. In addition, Adding water hyacinth to cover 15% of the clear water pond area can treat 52.58%, 38.88% and 7.64% of BOD, COD and Total Dissolved Solids, respectively. And when water hyacinth was not added to the clear water tank, the BOD, COD and Total Dissolved Solids in the out water were reduced by 40.28%, 17.11% and 13.22%, respectively. The important mechanism involved in water hyacinth wastewater treatment is filtering process by root and the process by which the roots absorb pollution.
