Abstract

This present study aimed to study the nature of agricultural activities and to analyze the factors affecting the success of agricultural activities of the Young Farmer Project in Santisuk School, Doi Lo District, Chiang Mai Province. Santisuk School was established in 2010 with a total of 40 members selected from students with a broad range of interests and professional experience. This project is run by a high school student. There are five main activities for students to participate in the project, as follows: (i) growing organic vegetables such as Chinese pea, Cantonese pea, coriander, and long bean, and so forth, (ii) pig raising, (iii) raising frog in “condo”, (vi) raising of laying hens and broilers, and (v) raising fish in cages. This research was studied from the total target population and without random sampling as follows: 5 school administrators, 1 teacher responsible for agricultural activities, 40 participating students, and their parents who participated in the activities. An in-depth interviews and questionnaires were used as a tool for data collection. First, the study of attitudes towards the Young Farmer Project in Santisuk school, it was found that the school administrators, teachers in charge of the project, most of the students participating in the project, and their parents gave the attitude towards the Youth Farm Project at Santisuk school at a high level of agreement. Second, the study of opinions on factors affecting the success of agricultural activities of the Youth Farmers Project at Santisuk school, it was found that the factors that school administrators, teachers in charge of the project, students, and their parents gave the views that the factors affecting the success of the agricultural activities of the Youth Farmers Project at Santisuk school at a high to the highest level, i.e., (i) the agricultural activities of the young farmers project related to the mission, vision, and education management goal of the Santisuk school, (ii) there were agricultural extension officers taking part in the project, (iii) the agricultural activities of the Young Farmers Project in the school were suitable for the area and climate, (iv) the students acquired equally useful agricultural knowledge, skills, as well as agricultural practice techniques, (v) the students had potentially practical experiences in the agriculture field, (vi) the students had essential career skills such as growing crops, raising animals, and using a variety of agricultural equipment, and (vii) the school had sufficient personnel to carry out the agricultural activities. These phenomena mentioned above might be possibly explained that the school administrators expected that the Young Farmers Project was highly beneficial to their own students. In other word, this project encouraged students to interact with the agricultural procedure, contented experts in their communities, spent their free time wisely, applied and build on their agricultural skills to cover a variety of activities in their daily living, etc. Thus far, the school fully supported as well as provided the personnel, budget, materials, and equipment, setting for agricultural activities, and kept pushing the project to be successful. Moreover, there was supporting from outside agencies as well. Teachers and advisors for young farmers who are able to give advising, guiding, and educating were also necessary. In addition, parents also encouraged their children to participate in the Young Farmer Project. In their point of views, they anticipated that the project had various benefits for their children, e.g., the students were able to voluntarily join the project by themselves, gave students choices based on a variety of interests. Moreover, the student could offer other extracurricular interest activities based on their interests and could be a leader for the activities that they conducted. Various advantages for students who participate in this project were having self-reliance in the agriculture field, understanding the learning process to effectively working processes and applying it in the future, knowing how to work as a teamwork, solving problems together, economizing, earning extra money while studying, applying the knowledge gained to promote and develop their own community, and adapting the knowledge to his/her family for getting more income as well as determining career interests in agriculture for themselves and their family in the future. Almost all of the results described above, it could be seen that all factors combined together resulted in most participants, the school administrators, the teacher in charge of the project, and parents had the positive attitude towards the project at Santisuk School and all worked in close cooperation with each other. Resulting in the success of agricultural activities by receiving the outstanding young farmer award in 2019.
