Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an abnormality of the airway in which it collapses or narrows during sleep. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard treatment for OSA. However, OSA patients benefits from CPAP depend on how closely they adhere to CPAP treatment. This cross-sectional research aimed to explore CPAP adherence and factors related to CPAP adherence in persons with OSA. This study was conducted at the Sleep Disorder Center, Center of Medical Excellence, Faculty of Medicine Chiang Mai University. The framework of this study is based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). The participants in this study were 94 OSA-acceptant CPAP treatment patients. The self-report questionnaire was comprised of 1) The Demographic Recording Form 2) The Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire [FOSQ-10 Thai version] 3) The Self-Efficacy Measure for Sleep Apnea [SEMSA] 4) The Perceived Barriers in CPAP use Questionnaire and 5) The CPAP Adherence Recording Form. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and binary logistical regression. The results of this study revealed that: 1. The number of patients who adhere to CPAP treatment was 51 persons (54.3%). 2. Perceived seriousness was significantly associated with CPAP adherence (p < .001) (OR =5.684; 95% CI = 2.025-15.957). Perceived susceptibility, perceived benefit, perceived self-efficacy and perceived barriers were not associated with CPAP adherence. The findings of this study demonstrated that perceived seriousness is an important factor in CPAP adherence. Healthcare providers can use this information to develop educational and awareness programs to promote perceived seriousness for enhancing CPAP adherence among OSA patients.
