Abstract: | Depression among older adults with alcohol dependence is a mental health problem that has a tremendous impact on themselves, their family, and society. Problem Solving Therapy maybe one alternative interventional strategy that can reduce depression in older adults with alcohol dependence. This two group pre post test quasi experimental study aimed to examine the effect of Problem Solving Therapy on depression in patients with alcohol dependence at Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital, Chiang Mai province, Thailand. Participants were selected by simple random sampling and included 32 patients with depression and alcohol dependence who were admitted to Suanprung Psychiatric hospital. Research instruments consisted of: 1) the Demographic Data Form, 2) 9 screening questions (9Q), 3) Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale revised version ofSuanprung Psychiatric Hospital, 4) the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and 5) the Problem Solving Therapy program. The program was content validated by three experts. Data were analyzed using descriptive statisticsand non parametric inferential statistics, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Mann Whitney U test. The results of this study revealed that: 1. After discharge from the hospital, patients with alcohol dependence had a significantly lower mean depression score than before receiving the therapy (p <.001). 2. After discharge from the hospital, patients with alcohol dependence who received the Problem Solving Therapy had a significantly lower mean depression score than those who received the usual care (p<.001). The results of this study indicate that Problem Solving Therapy is effective in reducingdepression among older adults with alcohol dependence Therefore, psychiatric nurses should apply this program to reduce depression in older adult patients with alcohol dependence. |
