Abstract: This study aimed to 1) investigate the process of community participation in community forest management, and to 2) study current conditions of community forest management, problems and obstacles in community forest management. There were two types of instruments used to collect data as 1) a questionnaire was used to collect data from state officials, personnel from agencies and organizations, monks, co unity leaders, local philosophers, and people, totally 55 persons, in the area of Mae Ta Sub-district, Mac-On District, Chiang Mai province for satisfaction assessment, 2) an interview with 7 relevant persons, community representatives, who played an important role in the target area so as to study perception and mobilization of policies, roles and duties, roles and duties in communities, public relations, coordination with community and state agencies, problems and obstacles including suggestions for making an analysis. The data obtained from the questionnaire and interview were interpreted and described. The findings from the study showed that people paid attention and gave importance to mutual problem solving related to deforestation and forest degradation. Power of community was expressed through gathering in a group to analyze arising problems and impacts so as to seek mutual solution guidelines. The community made cooperation in preparing action plans by determining requirements, provisions, and laws to ensure the community operation was carried out in the same direction according to the established action plans and forests of Mae Ta community could be fertile again by means of cooperation from all sectors and instilling consciousness in forest preservation and taking care of forests through various activities and projects in combination with community traditions and cultures passed down from the past. Buddhism principles were used to enhance the community operation. People kept monitoring and preventing the occurrence of deforestation. Offenders were arrested and transferred to government sectors to handle further. Besides, career promotion was available in community by relying on the principle of sufficiency economy for development so as to lessen forest invasion; for example, promoting baby comn cultivation, animal raising for food or products, organic farming so that people in the area could sell products outside their community, making Mae Ta community widely known by many people outside in terms of farming products. People could generate their income and the community became an agro-tourism site. It could be said that this situation was the effect from the cooperation of people in the community who brainstormed and created action plans and developing guidelines, leading to an elevation of livelihood of people in the area who expected to see Mae Ta community forest fertile again, a variable that brought success to Mae Ta sub-district community, Mae On district, Chiang Mai province. Actually, what Mae Ta sub-district community needed were government sector agencies should mutually implement action plans with community more and more including specifying the scope of forest areas to be more explicit, coordination with government sector agencies between provinces should be made to ensure further cooperation in mutual care and development in the future.
