Abstract: Primigravid women face challenges due to several stressors. Supporting them to cope appropriately with this stress is an important role of the nurse-midwife. The purpose of this descriptive-correlational research study was to explore the relationships of pregnancy-specific stress, social support, and coping among primigravid women. The participants were selected according to the inclusion criteria and consisted of 85 healthy primigravid women, who received antenatal care at the Maternal and Newborn Hospital, Vientiane Province, the Lao People's Democratic Republic from May to July 2020. The research tools consisted of a personal data record form; the Prenatal Distress Questionnaire by Lobel et al. (2008), the Thai version by Rungnapa Posaen et al. (2019); the Social Support Questionnaire developed by Jirawan Niramitpasa (2008); and the Prenatal Coping Questionnaire developed by Sukunya Muengleang et al. (2018). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment-correlation coefficient. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Participants demonstrated overall prenatal coping at a moderate level (X̅ = 69.65, S.D. = 14.41) 2. Pregnancy-specific stress had a significant positive correlation with prenatal coping among primigravid women (r = .282, p < .01). The findings from this study can be used as baseline data for planning effective nursing care to promote prenatal coping among primigravid women by considering pregnancy-specific stress and social support.
