Abstract

Self-management among older persons with chronic kidney disease in early stages can prevent the progression into end-stage kidney disease. The objective of this descriptive correlational research was to study health literacy and self-management and examine the correlation between health literacy and self-management in older persons with chronic kidney disease. The sample of the study consisted of 88 patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease between stage 1 and stage 3 who resided in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai. Data collection took place between January and February 2020. The research instruments were comprised of demography and medical data questionnaire, health literacy questionnaire, and self-management behavior questionnaire in older persons with chronic kidney disease. Data analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation. The results showed a high level of health literacy and self-management among older persons with chronic kidney disease. Health literacy was found to have a moderate level of statistical significant positive relationship with self management (r=.67, p<.001). The results of this research can serve as fundamental knowledge for public health personnel in promoting self-management in older persons with stage 1-3 chronic kidney disease through health literacy enhancement.
