Abstract

The objectives of this research were to explore certain personal, economic and societal characteristics, quality of life, and to identify factors affecting the quality of life of farmers in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai Province. Data were obtained from 264 farmers in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai Province, using the standard questionnaire: World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief – Thai (WHOQOL-BREF-THAI) developed by Department of Mental Health. Descriptive and inferential statistics used for data analysis included percentage, mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation. Hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis. This research shown that the majority of farmers were male, with an average age of 56.8 years. They mostly completed primary education and were married with two children on average. The farmers had an average of 14.7 years of farming experience. They received an average net income of 12,030.30THB/month with no outstanding debt, and had financial savings. The farmers hold an average agricultural area of 6,743.94 square meter. The overall quality of life of farmers was at a moderate level (x ̅ = 3.53). Factors correlated to quality of life with statistical significance at 0.01 level (p<0.01) included age, job security, communication among farmers, quality of healthcare provided by agencies, and needs for personal/life development.
