Abstract: Work safety management systems are effective processes which reduce workplace harm and injury. The objective of this descriptive study was to examine work safety management systems for nurses and identify nurses’ opinions towards the work safety management systems in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The study sample consisted of 379 registered nurses who had experience in nursing for at least one year and who were randomly selected by a systematic random sampling technique. The research instruments consisted of a questionnaire which was developed based on the work safety management model suggested by Fernandez-Muniz, Montes-Peon, & Vazquez-Ordas (2007). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics; i.e. frequency, mean, and percentage. Study results revealed the following: 1. The overall score of the work safety management system was at an acceptable level ("X" ̅=1.80, SD=0.57). Considering the scores of each component of the work safety management systems: work safety policies scored the highest average score ("X" ̅=1.95, SD=0.58); followed by control and review of activities ("X" ̅=1.90, SD=0.56); then communication and transfer of information ("X" ̅=1.85, SD=0.55); then planning ("X" ̅=1.81, SD=0.54); staff training and developing safety competency ("X" ̅=1.69, SD=0.59), and finally encouragement for participation ("X" ̅=1.63, SD=0.60). 2. The majority of nurses reported that the work safety management systems in the hospital were suitable for reducing workplace harm and injury. Nevertheless, nurses had recommendations to improve the work safety management system of the hospital. The recommendations included 1) expanding the specific guidelines for caring for patients who have a high risk of spreading an infection to others, 2) increasing protection devices and motivating nurses to comply with work safety practice guidelines, 3) increasing work safety training, 4) increasing formal communication about unsafe work to reach all nursing personnel, and 5) handling all unsafe work by using root cause analysis. The results of this study could be used as information for nurse managers to improve work safety management systems in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.
