Abstract: The purpose of this independent study was to examine the results of using a model method to support grade 5 students’ ability in solving mathematics word problems, and their opinions toward the instructional activities by using the model method for solving mathematics word problems. This study was conducted among 28 Prathom Suksa 5 (grade 5) students who enrolled in the second semester, 2014 academic year, at Ban Wieng Phan School, Maesai District, Chiang Rai Province. The tools included 1) The instructional plans of using the model method to promote ability in solving mathematics word problems of grade 5 students (each plan takes 1 hour) 2) The mathematics word problem solving test (12 items) 3) Teacher’s post-class record form 4) Student’s learning record form and 5) Student’s interviews. The data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and descriptive analysis. The findings showed that the students could correctly solve mathematics word problems, in particular, by analyzing mathematics word problem and drawing the model in order to make sense of the problems. Later, the students considered from the model and transferred to mathematics sentences; then, they could find the correct answer. From The mathematics word problems solving test, it revealed that 71.43 percent of the students had their scores over the criteria of 70 percent (the average score was 76.49 percent). From Student’s learning record form, the students had good attitude toward solving the mathematics word problem by using the model method. The students were confident to show how they solved the problems in front of the classroom. They were enthusiastic, joyful, and interested in and curious to learn mathematics. From the questionnaire, it showed that learning activities through the use of the model method was interesting. Students wanted to use the model to solve the problems in higher grade levels as well as preferred younger generations to have an opportunity to learn by using the model in solving mathematics word problems. The model method allowed students to solve mathematics world problems more easily. They were interested in learning mathematics. Finally, the model method helped both high and low achievers to gain a better understanding of mathematics.
