Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between earnings management in family firms and female directors on the board, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, in publicly listed companies on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The results show that being a family firm has a negative impact on earnings management. Specifically, after the outbreak of COVID-19, family firms exhibited a decrease in earnings management compared to the pre-pandemic period. Furthermore, it was also discovered that the presence of female directors on the board has a negative impact on earnings management, but this influence only becomes significant when the proportion of female directors exceeds 10%. However, the impact of female directors on earnings management decreases as their proportion increases. Additionally, the presence of independent female directors reduces earnings management, but the presence of female directors who have family relationships within family firms leads to an increase in earnings management. These findings underscore the importance of gender diversity and equality within organizations from a financial and earnings management perspective, emphasizing that diverse boards and the presence of female directors can significantly influence a company’s earnings management practices.
