Abstract

This study aims to study the forms and functions of Ban Guan pottery. To know the knowledge and wisdom of Lanna traditional pottery production. This study was conducted by using the qualitative research methodology. The data were collected from both documentary materials and involving people by interviewing and observing. The result shows that Ban Guan Community is a traditional community where the potteries have been long being produced. It also passes on the culture and knowledge of pottery from one generation to the next through by female potters. Ban Guan's potterries has been well-known for a long time. Pottery products that are still available at present can be classified into 30 forms. Each form has different components, and each component has different characteristics. Every form of pottery has 3 main parts, namely the mouth, the body and the bottom. There are various colors and patterns that are relevant to the present era on the Pottery. Forms of pottery are diverse according to their roles and functions that related to the local culture. Local culture which still reflect the way of life in Lanna society. Ban Guan Potteries have 2 key types of roles, namely (1) the role and function in daily life, and (2) the roles in culture and society. The latter includes the roles of ceremonies and traditional customs, local cultural, aesthetic, and economic aspects. Ban Guan pottery is a folk art, a local handicraft and a local wisdom that should be preserved and inherited to be with the Lanna land forever.
