Abstract: | The thesis on “Discipline, Self-Regulation and Depression of the Graduate Students” aims to understand the incidence of depression among graduate students, who are six times more likely to experience the condition than the general population under this ideology of neoliberalism. With the qualitative research method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and descriptive data analysis. A total of 16 key informants were identified in the study targeting people graduating from graduate studies and mild to moderate depression. The results showed that. The neoliberal system that affects all sectors of society, even education, has been transformed in line with neoliberal approaches. Governance creates rules and converts instruction into products. In addition, neoliberal systems have come to direct the individual’s life in the way society wants. This makes students struggle to compete in every plane of their lives to push themselves to live the good life that society requires. They are studying in higher education to obtain a degree to add value to themselves. Simultaneously, they have to work to finance the expenses incurred during their studies and manage their relationships with others to create a social capital that will lead to a smooth life. Therefore, students have to shoulder the overlapping roles in life—as students, employees, and family members. Each part has a discourse that governs the student's practice. As a result, students must be disciplined and monitor themselves to comply with those discourse frameworks. Planning time management behaviors and social relationships over 24 hours leave no time to relax and take care of themselves. Because they have to monitor their actions, force themselves to follow discourses and rules fully and punish themselves when it is impossible or not as expected. Those processes have led to the path of people with depression to eventually becoming depressed patients. In other words, depression is not caused by the individual alone. Instead, it results from a distorted society that forces people in the community to believe and follow social stereotypes. Suggestion 1. Diagnosis and treatment of depressed patients should look beyond the disease but should also look into the patient's world. Adjusting the attitude and way of thinking goes hand in hand with medical treatment. At the same time, individuals should lower their expectations. Because too many expectations put them into the “not good enough” state repeatedly beat themselves up. In addition, excessive stress in managing life according to the schedule of life that is not resting can lead to health problems, both physical and mental health. 2. Government agencies and educational institutions should reflect and establish a comprehensive and inclusive welfare system, for example, encouraging space for discussion and exchange of ideas. Consultation in an anonymous form, or there is a mechanism to create a network of students who will help and encourage each other. Concurrently, in this area, the agency must be able to monitor and monitor the service users’ conditions to assist promptly. |
