Abstract

This research aimed to 1) study background of Japan Foundation and Japanese art and culture promoting activities in Thailand organized by Japan Foundation, Bangkok 2) study how Japan Foundation, Bangkok manages art and cultural activities in Thailand – through a Japanese Film Festival case study. This qualitative research utilized tree types of tools – documents, observation as well as interviews – to collect the data. The study found that 1) Japan Foundation was founded by the government of Japan with a mission to build a good relationship between Japan and other countries across the world through a wide variety of cultural exchange activities. Japan Foundation now has 25 offices across the world (excluding offices in Japan). The foundation has established Bangkok office in 1974 called ‚Japan Foundation, Bangkok. ‛ The Bangkok unit classifies its services into 3 different departments: art and culture, Japanese language as well as Japanese study and intellectual exchange. 2) Japanese Film Festival is a part of art and cultural exchange activities organized annually for more than 40 years in Thailand. According to Japan Foundation, film is recognized as a work of art. A series of Japanese films screening through this festival aimed to showcase Japanese art, culture, lifestyle as well as information about Japan in various aspects. Apart from promoting a wide choice of Japanese films and directors, the Japanese Film Festival that held once a year worldwide, is expected to boost Japanese creative industry as well.
