Abstract: | Objective: To investigate tooth sensitivity caused by intensity light irradiation from two intraoral scanners and a light curing unit. Materials and methods: Forty-five healthy volunteers with good oral hygiene were recruited. They were equally classified into three groups; A=normal cervical area, B=cervical cavity without sensitivity, and C= cervical cavity with sensitivity group by using cold test (4 ± 1 °C) and NRS pain assessment. Two thermocouple probes were attached to the cervical area of the experimental tooth and control tooth with composite resin. Sensitivity response was monitored using participant grip force. The digital oscilloscope was used to record surface temperature and pain response during intraoral scanners or a light-curing unit irradiation. The high-intensity light from the light-curing unit and intraoral scanner was randomly applied on the test surface for 20s. The data were compared statistical with two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. Results: The mean ± SD of surface temperature increased by 22.98 ± 3.20 °C and 5.86 ± 1.46 °C during irradiation of LCU and two Scanners, consecutively. More number of participants responded to LCU irradiation and reported higher pain response (5.10 ± 1.96) than two Scanner with shorter reaction time (2.10s to 18.70s). The participants from the cavity with sensitivity group had the shortest response time. There was positive correlation between surface temperature and pain response (R2 = 0.232; p<0.01). Conclusion: The heat from high-intensity light from LCU and Scanners can cause sensitivity in some individuals. The higher light intensity would raise more surface temperature and cause more sensitivity response. |
