Abstract

This dissertation aims at understanding the concept of romantic love in the songs of Suntaraporn band as a representative of the social and cultural life of Bangkok’s middle class. From the 1930s to the 1960s was the high time of band at a cross between modernity and Thainess. By blending American-style jazz with vernacular music, the band distilled a modern cultural taste of the city’s middle class. Its songs also reflected a value put on romantic love, in tandem with the “sentimental” emotions and expressions of the class, as well as the “conditions” that affect love life and relationship styles of the class in relation with other contemporary contexts.
