Abstract: The purpose of this research is to study and develop a technique to improve the RPL protocol routing efficiency by discovering neighboring nodes for load balancing in wireless sensor networks. We compare the performance of the proposed approach with the conventional methods which utilize the objective function namely OF0 and MRHOF. The idea of the proposed approach is to balance the load of nodes in the network by discovering neighboring nodes for the RPL routing protocol in wireless sensor networks. This research then measure the efficiency of the packet delivery ratio together with the end-to-end delay of data communication by comparing the proposed method with the OF0 and MRHOF objective functions. We conducted an experiment with the TSCH network simulation program with 50, 100, 200, 400 child nodes and one root node. The simulation results showed that the proposed method has a higher packet delivery success rate than other methods compared. This is because the load balancing within the network helps to reduce the probability that one of the nodes will experience traffic congestion. This results in more efficient packet transmission on the network. However, the amount of control messages on the network remains an issue that the researchers plan to study in the future Specifically, the volume of the control messages tends to be higher when the number of node increases. This eventually affects the ratio of the transmission of data packets on the wireless sensor network.
