Abstract

The Tai in Mong Yawng in Shan State of Myanmar, known as Tai Yawng, are Tai Lue who migrated from Sibson panna several hundred years ago. They brought the indigenous Tai Lue patterns and adopted some local patterns of Tai Yai and Tai Khun as well as some modern influences and resulted in the localized patterns. This research is interested in exploring the villages and houses in this area as it is the area that is not much explored in research. Despite the identical and well-conserved characteristics of architecture that are likely to change due to modernization and tourism accessibility to the area. This research has explored the study area, analyzed the architectural patterns in order to discuss the dynamics of Tai vernacular architecture. The field surveys set up criteria for selection of villages that continue the peasant way of life and conserve the Tai houses, while criteria for houses are according to their ages and the remain of indigenous Tai patterns. Altogether four villages and nineteen houses are surveyed and collected. The field methods were based on observations and interviews with inhabitants, leaders and key persons in the area. The results from the survey reveal some identical Tai Lue patterns along with some adopted pattems of Tai Yai and Tai Khun. Some climatic adaptation and changes due to needs and demands of households are also observable. The field survey results from this part will be analyzed in the next part of study about the patterns of Tai Vernacular Houses.
