Abstract

Informed consent is a process for getting permission from human participants before conducting research involving the humans. Consent is given after information about the research project is communicated to the participant and it is ensured that this information is clearly understood. The informed consent form consist of a participant information sheet (Part 1) which must give sufficient information to allow participants to understand the project and to decide whether or not they want to take part. The information sheet should contain information under the headings given below where appropriate, and in the order specified, as well as being written in simple, non-technical terms: the purpose of the research, any reasonably foreseeable risks or discomforts to the subject, any benefits to the participants, the approximate number of subjects involved in the study, and whom to contact for answers to pertinent questions about the research and research subject’s rights. The consent form (Part 2) is the document which participants sign voluntarily indicating their consent to participate. The researcher should present to the Ethics Committee on how to treat participants according to the three fundamental ethical principles for research involving humans, which are respect, beneficence and justice.
