Abstract: As a traditional costume of Han Chinese, Han clothing is an important part of national culture. There is a huge product demand of Han clothing in the Chinese market. Due to historical reasons, it is difficult for people to acquire knowledge of traditional Han clothing, which gradually becomes an obstacle to the development of Han clothing. This study finds that the advocates and designers of Han clothing generally lack knowledge of traditional Han clothing. The purpose of this research is to study and identify the basic requirements for traditional clothing design, to extract the knowledge used in the design of traditional Han clothing and to develop the design process manual of the traditional clothing for Han clothing advocates. The methods and tools of this research include Design Thinking (DT) theory, documentation, Interview, flowchart, and Brainstorming. DT is used to build a framework that captures knowledge about Han clothing. The interview and brainstorming are used to collect comments and to reconfirm the data. A history expert was interviewed to increase design knowledge of essential and significant factors. The flowchart is to show the new design process more intuitively. This research has three advantages: 1) helping designers to follow the essential factors and practices in the design of Han clothing, 2) helping people who wear Han clothing in life to choose better designs, 3) helping designers to follow the new design process of Han clothing in practice to confirm the effective application of this knowledge.
