Abstract

The objectives of this research were to develop a handbook and multimedia resources regarding basic drug use for patients with uncontrollable hypertension and to study the effect of using the handbook and multimedia resources on knowledge regarding drug use for patients with uncontrollable hypertension. Data collection consisted of general interviews and general information questionnaires for patients with uncontrollable hypertension, and an assessment of the effectiveness of the handbook and multimedia resources. The second phase studied the effects of using the handbook. The sample was patients with uncontrollable hypertension registered in Choeng Doi subdistrict, Doisaket district, Chiang Mai province. There were two groups: the experimental group (n=30) and the control group (n=30). The sample was selected based on purposive sampling. Data was collected twice. The first round of data collection was a pre-test. After that, patients with uncontrollable hypertension tried using the handbook and multimedia resources regarding basic drug use. A guide to use of the handbook was provided to the 30 people in the experimental group. They were asked to take this handbook with them and spend one month reading it. They were also taught how to use the multimedia resources on YouTube along with reading the handbook. After one month, data was collected again from the control and experimental groups using the post-test in order to compare the knowledge of the experimental group before and after using the handbook of basic drug use for hypertension, and compare the difference in knowledge between the control and experimental groups. The experimental group had a higher mean knowledge score after using the handbook than did the control group with a statistical significance level of < 0.001. Handbook use is suitable for patients with uncontrollable hypertension as the handbook has been developed with complete and comprehensive content. The results of the study can be used to solve drug use problems for patients with uncontrollable hypertension and to give patients the skills to manage drug use properly by themselves in order to reduce the problems and the severity of the disease.
