Abstract: The nursing practice environment is important to ensure that nurses can practice with excellence. This independent study uses descriptive research aimed to study the nursing practice environment and make recommendations to improve the nursing practice environment based on the perception of nurses in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The sample is 347 nurses with at least 1 year working experience. The instrument used in this study was the Practice Environment Scale of Nurse Work Index (PES-NWI), Thai version, translated by Nantsupawat (2011) from Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (Lake, 2002). The total reliability of this instrument was 0.96 , for each aspect equal to 0.84-0.94. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics consisting of mean and standard deviations. The findings of the study indicated that the score of the nursing practice environment, as perceived by nurses was at a moderate level for five aspects ("X" ̅ = 2.88, SD = 0.68). The perceived nursing practice environment of nursing foundations for quality of care and the relationship between doctors and nurses were good level. The other three aspects, consisting of nurse manager ability, nurse leadership, and nurse participation in hospital affairs, and staffing and resource adequacy were at moderate levels. The highest average score is nursing foundations for quality of care and the lowest average score is staffing and resource adequacy. The study suggests ways to improve the nursing practice environment. The nurses’ participation in hospital affairs should be promoted such as listening to their opinions on policy and decisions making. In addition, nurses should be promoted for knowledge and capacity development training and supporting funding for further study. The nursing foundations for quality of care include encouraging nurses to be trained in specialized fields and updating nursing standards regularly. Suggestions for improving nurse manager ability and nurse of leadership include listening to the opinions and suggestions of practitioners and receiving leadership development training. Suggestions for improving the staffing and resource adequacy including arranging adequate staffing and workload and increasing the wages, salaries, compensation or other benefits. Suggestion for improving the relationship between doctors and nurses arranging monthly meetings between doctors and nurses and performing activities which develop the relationship between physicians and other departments. Nurse administrators can take the results of this study as the basis for improving the environmental quality of nursing practice environments.
