Phylogenetic information is useful for the exploitation of ornamental germplasm in introducing novel resources or selecting closely related species for the introgression of horticultural interesting traits. However, in traditional plant systematics, limited numbers of morphological parameters have been evaluated as key characters, and hence, have often caused confusion in classification and induced many conflicts among taxonomists. On the other hand, recently developing molecular phylogeny provides more accurate and stable information for the relationship within each taxon level. In this article, we show some examples to apply molecular phylogenetic data on exploitation of ornamental germplasm in introducing novel resources with genus Rhododendron (Ericaceae) and on selection of closely related species for the introgression of horticulturally interesting traits with genus Dendrobium (Orchidaceae). © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
