Abstract: The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the components of communication of Phattakhanbanthung Television program. Taken them as communicative events, this thesis analyzes three episodes of Phattakanbangthung Television Program by using an approach to ethnography of communication proposed by Saville-Troike (2003) as a frame of an analysis. The three episodes chosen for analysis include Krachiap Khiao, Kai Dam, and Kluai Tani The analysis shows that Phattakhanbanthung can be categorized as television documentary series with its main purpose of sharing knowledge about locally grown food and how to use them to make dishes. With its friendly and easy-going atmosphere, this television program is targeted at the urban middle class in order to raise their awareness towards the values of ingredients from local sources and let them know where their food actually come from. The invited guests of each episode are farmers who have worked with local produce. The program can be set either in a plantation or a ranch depending on different kinds of local produce presented in each episode. The message content of each episode focuses on locally grown food and its benefits on health and economy. The act sequence can be divided into two parts. While the first part concentrates on ingredients from local sources, the second part moves on to the cooking process. Throughout the program, different kinds of speech acts used in making small talk conversation are employed by the participants while sharing knowledge in order to make a friendly and easy-going atmosphere of the show. Based on the analysis, participants in Phattakhanbanthung are assigned specific roles. That is to say, the opening and the closing of the program are dealt only by the host. During the show, the questions and answers are given only by the host and the invited guest, respectively. Regarding the turn-taking system, both the single unit type and the combined unit type based on adjacency pairs are found. Various kinds of speech acts used in making small talk are also used throughout the program. In terms of the style of language, the participants are found using both simple sentences and sentences with rhyming words.
