Abstract: Development of a nurse competency framework is important for human resource management. The purpose of this developmental study was to develop a competency framework for registered nurses in the surgical intensive care unit of Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital by applying the strategies for developing competency frameworks of Marrelli, Tondora, and Hoge (2005). The samples consisted of five nurse specialists and five experts chosen by purposive sampling. The instrument used was an interview guide validated by three experts. Data collection consisted of reviewing the relevant literature, interviewing nurse specialists, developing the competency framework and content-validating the competency framework. The results of the study revealed that a competency framework for registered nurses in the surgical intensive care unit of Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital consisted of three competencies: 1) nursing care for surgical critical patients which consists of 15 behavioral indicators, 2) nursing care for trauma patient which consists of 14 behavioral indicators, and 3) nursing care for cardiothoracic surgery patients which consists of 16 behavioral indicators. Nurse administrators could use this competency framework as a guideline for evaluating and developing competencies of registered nurses in the surgical intensive care unit of Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital.
