Abstract: | The families of critically ill patients who are admitted into an Intensive Care Unit need more support and caring from critical care team. This integrative review aimed to summarize empirical research evidence related to the method of supporting families of critically ill patients. The review was done via searching and screening of research included published and unpublished studies in Thai and English language from 2004 to 2013. These research studies were evaluated using a Critical Appraisal Form for experimental research and data were extracted using a Data Extraction Form, both of which were developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute [JBI] for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery. Findings revealed that there were 12 studies in total. Three of them were experimental research studies and 9 were quasi-experimental studies. Conclusion of the review result was performed using content summarized method to explain supporting families of critically ill patients. There were 5 effective methods for supporting families, including supporting based on families need, family support coordinator, communication for decision making, family conference using communication strategy and nurse-led intervention for decision making. Effectiveness of supporting families’ outcomes composed of improved process of supporting families; increased satisfaction, adjustment, and effectiveness of decision making; decreased anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD], depression, and conflict in decision making. Findings from this integrative review can be used as recommendations for the development of clinical practice guidelines for supporting families of critically ill patients. |
