The research instrument used for this study was an interview guides. The data collection process included: 1) the creation of a competency systems team, 2) the identification of performance metrics, 3) the development of a tentative competencies list, 4) the definition of competency and behavioral indicators, 5) the development of an initial competency model, 6) the cross-checking of the initial model, and finally 7) model refinement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the calculation of content validity index. The results of the study revealed that the competency framework for professional nurses in the operating room of Lamphun Hospital consisted of 5 competencies and 39 behavioral indicators as follows: 1) the nursing care for patient safety competency which consisted of 13 behavioral indicators, 2) the management competency which consisted of 7 behavioral indicators, 3) the nursing care for patient undergoing surgery competency which consisted of 11 behavioral indicators, 4) the patient and family rights advocacy competency which consisted of 5 behavioral indicators, and 5) the hospital registration and information recording systems competency which consisted of 3 behavioral indicators. Nurse administrators can apply this competency framework as a guideline for assessing and developing the competency inventory of registered nurses in the operating room.
