Abstract: This research had the objectives of investigating on books that were used in a high frequency and those that were used in less frequency as well as surveying the major resources used in the Central Library of Chiang Mai University. This was a quantitative research based on a survey from the circulation statistics of the Central Library, faculty libraries and those of centers and institutes of Chiang Mai University, which involved 21 libraries altogether during 2012-2013. The research population consisted of 469,497 books in Thai and foreign languages, not including reference books, theses, dissertations, textbook and curriculum, reserved books, government printed materials, northern material collections, novels, short stories and books undergoing mending. The tools used in the research were a data recording form and interview form and the data was analyzed using frequency distribution, percentile and description of the interview results. The research results showed that book circulation of the Central Library was 76.9% whereas 23.07% were not borrowed. However, the circulation at the other libraries (faculty, center and institute libraries) was 76.93%. When classified by categories, it was found that all faculties and institutes had shown high statistics of circulation in the categories that corresponded to the content of the curriculum or courses offered in the respective faculties or the nature of the work of the institutes. As for the Central Library, the circulation was rather close in all categories. When classified by language, more books in the Thai language were checked out from the libraries of the Demonstration School, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Business Administration respectively. Books published in 2000-2009 had a higher frequency of circulation than those of other years. The highest frequency of books checked out from the Central Library of CMU was 1-50 times. The results indicated that the Central Library of CMU was able to acquire books corresponding to the curriculum and courses offered at the university and meet the needs of the different groups of users from various faculties for their specialization and types of materials. This, therefore, confirms that the Central Library and the libraries of the faculties, centers as well as institutes of CMU had an efficiency in budget management to cost-effectively acquire their information resources.
